URS to Forge Partnership with PAASE, ECSAAK

The Philippine-American Academy of Science and Engineering (PAASE) in partnership with the Edu-Connect Southeast Asia Association (ECSAAK) held the visit-cum-conference called the PH-TW Bayanihan Linkages through (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Agriculture, Mathematics, and Medicine) STEAAMM with the theme “Building Partnerships for Inclusive Education, Science, and Technology” on May 7-11 in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan.

PARTNERS. URS delegates convene with PAASE officers and ECSAAK representing Taiwan-based colleges and universities for possible academic and research collaborations.

PAASE is an organization of scientists and engineers of Philippine descent actively involved in scholarly and academic research activities promoting collaborative work between US and Philippine-based researchers. ECSAAK, on the other hand, is an alliance of universities, businesses, professional associations, and civil society organizations based in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. PAASE’s partnership with ECSAAK promoted collaborations with several Philippine higher educational institutions, especially with state universities and colleges pushing forward ECSAAK’s vision of “Universities as Emerging Good Governance Hubs of Asian Inclusive Education and Development.”

As Taiwan and the Philippines are now journeying towards a post-pandemic world, both PAASE and ECSAAK are now keen to revive partnership projects both in the Philippines and Taiwan. In this
premise, the Taiwan-Philippine partnership is built to foster solid ties on the matters of promoting science and technology. This will enable Taiwanese and Filipino scientists to learn from each other’s experiences and encourage university cooperation between the Philippines and Taiwan.

Delegates from the PAASE consisted of Dr. Mariano Sto. Domingo, president; Dr. Gisela Concepcion, immediate past president; and Dr. Felino Lansigan, chairperson of PAASE board of directors. Representatives from URS consisted of Dr. Nancy Pascual, university president; Dr. Marites Rio, vice president for research, development, extension, and production; and Ms. Rennie Mae De Lemon, director for planning, monitoring, and evaluation. Representatives from Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) headed by its president, Dr. Dennis de Paz, were also present. Taiwan delegation consisted of
representatives from Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU), College of Pharmacy of KMU, delegates from National Chunsing University (NCHU), delegates from National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST), delegates from National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (Yuntech), and representatives from National Changhua University of Education (NCUE).

Aimed at establishing international cooperation between and among the participants, the visit is specifically geared to establish research collaborations, promote student and faculty exchange programs, and conduct capacity-building programs. // ~ABC
