URS celebrates World Wildlife Day through Lakbay Aral

“Partnership for Wildlife Conservation” themed this year’s World Wildlife Day 2023.

To celebrate, the office of Rizal Provincial Environment and Natural Resources (PENRO) spearheaded the conduct of Lakbay Aral at Avilon Zoo on March 24, 2023 in partnership with the University of Rizal System.

URS representatives were the EEBRC Head and staffs, Campus Focal Persons, selected Tanay General Services non-teaching personnel and a medical personnel.

Avilon Zoo is currently the largest zoological institution in the Philippines in terms of collection of live animals. The 7.5 hectare facility located in Rodriguez, Rizal houses more than 3,000 specimens of exotic wildlife representing more than 500 species of birds, mammals reptiles, amphibians, freshwater fishes and invertebrates. The zoo has a diverse collection of Philippine native and endemic fauna, most of which have been bred successfully in captivity through AVILON’s ex situ conservation programs.

Included activities were Wildlife handling, guided tour and educational field trip to learn about wildlife, their status in the wild, and conservation efforts being done to preserve these threatened species and to protect the environment.

The center viewed this as an opportunity to expose and train our Focal Personnel and some field staff from the URS Tanay General services to the importance of wildlife handling and conservation in case they encounter one at their respective campuses.

The office of Environmental Education and Biodiversity Research Center is committed to inspire people towards environmental stewardship with the assistance and support of the focal personnel of the 10 campuses. With this in mind, the university through the center is actively involving in the different environmental advocacies initiated by the office of Rizal Provincial Environment and Natural Resources and other agencies in celebration of different environmental conservation events.
