Chico Shares UPLB’s DNA in Media and Communication

By: Dr. Mark Ray Sioson

Dir. Mark Lester Del Mundo Chico opened the two-day training on Website Content Development and Global University Image-Building Strategies on November 12 at the URS Morong Campus.

As Director of the University of the Philippines Los Baños Media and Communication Office, he talked about the principles and best practices for creating website content.

“Websites should consistently communicate what you do and who you are… what’s in it for the world,” Chico emphasized.

Dir. Chico reiterated that web content should focus on clarity, audience-centeredness, consistency, and brand voice, as well as relevance, value, credibility, and accuracy.

Meanwhile, he also explained strategic storytelling and news feature writing for institutional branding and engagement as part of Session 2. He also provided practical writing tips, which include having a strong hook, using concise and straightforward language, employing active verbs, and adding vivid details.

During the afternoon session, participants worked collaboratively on the given workshop. They crafted news and feature articles derived from campus events and also critiqued some uploads on the URS website, focusing on the characteristics of good web content.

The Office of Public Affairs, under the leadership of Dr. Jocelyn Gagalang, spearheaded this training for select faculty members, unit heads, and staff.

University officials also attended the seminar, including Dr. Leny Avecilla, Head University Statistical Office, who represented Dr. Marites Rio, Vice President for RDEP; Prof. Janice Hilao, who shared the rationale of the training; and Dr. Niclie Tiratira, URS Morong Campus Director, who conveyed the message of Dr. Nancy Pascual, the University President.
